Roth Named Kansas Advisor Of The Year

Posted 4/3/2014

By Jackie Nelson

Hesston Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Sponsor Dori Roth was honored with the Sponsor Of The Year award at State competition.

Roth has been the FBLA sponsor for the past 15 years at Hesston High.  Roth was nominated for the award by senior Sabrina Wollenberg, a four-year participant in the FBLA program.

“She deserves so much.  We did this all behind her back, too.  We didn’t tell anyone, but we’ve known since Thanksgiving.  And she deserves everything. She’s been doing this for 15 years and she is one of the best advisors.  I am grateful for her and it was an honor for me to do this for her,” said Wollenberg.

FBLA students said Roth has been a constant source of encouragement and energy.

“She’s a good motivator. She is really positive in how she talks to all of us,” said Scott McGehee.

Roth’s enthusiasm for students’ success is infectious during competitions and in the classroom.

Robotics Team Brings Home State Championship

Posted 4/3/2014

By Jackie Nelson

The Hesston High robotics team has not only brought home hardware this season, but now is the reigning Kansas State Robotics Champions.

On Saturday afternoon, the Robotics team traveled to Hutchinson to participate in the ESSDACK State Tournament of Champions.

“Hesston won the overall team championship for their first ever Kansas State Championship. Aaron Fuqua won the Best Design Award, and the team of Dave Merchant, Andrew Abbott and Aaron Fuqua earned a second place finish and the Tournament Finalist Award,” said Robotics instructor Trevor Foreman.

Senior Breanne Luzier, a veteran robotics student, said the program, and the students, have earned their state champion status.

“This really proves we can accomplish a lot,” she said.

Only in its second year, the Robotics program has consistently been bringing home hardware from competitions.

Child Care Center Going Whole Hog On Playground Renovation

Posted 4/3/2014

By Jackie Nelson

Hesston Child Care Center has gone whole hog with improvements to the center’s tricycle path.  The annual Pig Roast will be held Saturday, April 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Whitestone Mennonite Church to help offset the cost of the upgrades and help continue the improvements.

“The path is finished. We would like to re-work part of the east playground, create a pergola for shade where we had to take out a tree and have a new project for the area on the south side of our duplex annex,” she said.

Judy Friesen, Director of the Center, said children are already enjoying the new play area.

“We had some of the grandpas from Schowalter Villa come over and help take down some of the fencing around the new path.  When they got done moving the fence and were taking the children on a walk down the new path, this little boy looks up at one of the grandpas and says, ‘Thank you for making us a new sidewalk!’ It really was just so sweet,” said Friesen.

Ray Denno, a grandparent to one of the children at the Center and a long-tiem supporter, donates the hog to be roasted and volunteers his time to prepare the main dish, said Friesen.
