Hesston Honoring Heroes On Memorial Day

Hesston will remember its’ veterans with the 27th Memorial Service in the Hesston   

Cemetery at 11 a.m., Monday, May 29.  

The Master of Ceremony will be Ken Schwanke, a member of the Hesston Veteran’s Memorial Committee. 

The Memorial Address will be given by Rev. Dr. Gary Blaine,  pastor of the Highland Trinity United Church of Christ.

Blaine was born in St. Petersburg, Florida.  He graduated from Florida Southern College and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Emory University.  He has been in ministry since 1975.

Blaine is the chaplain at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado, and the minister of the Trinity United Church of Christ. 

He is a guest columnist for the El Dorado Times Gazette, and is also published in a variety of magazines and his blog.  He enjoys caring for his horses, fly-fishing, and photography.

His address on Memorial Day is, “Warriors are Moral Agents Too.”

The flag will be posted by Neil McChesney with the assistance of the Hesston Boy Scouts. This year the flag will be flown in honor of John McKinley, a decorated Vietnam veteran from Hesston who passed away this year.

 Richard Fulk will read the names of each veteran who has fallen this past year as a floral tribute is being laid at the base of the memorial statue by the local Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. 

The invocation and benediction will be led by Rev. Brad Burkholder, pastor of the Mennonite Brethren Church. 

Delvin Wohlgemuth will lead those in attendance the singing of “God Bless America” followed by Lyle Graversen playing “Taps.” This will conclude the service.

Members of the Memorial Day committee are Robert and Chris Carlton; Dick and Karen Fulk; Dennis and Jeannine Hoheisel; Neil McChesney; Michelle and Kent Pfautz; Ken and Jody Schwanke; Donald Typer and Max Unruh.

Please bring lawn chairs for your comfort, because the seating is limited.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Hesston City Shop.
