City Denies Graber Grain Farm Petition

About dozen residents were present at the council meeting to address the council or hear the outcome of the petition, which was denied and Graber Grain Farms will not be able to vacate from the city.

Monday evening, the Hesston City Council rejected a petition by Graber Grain Farms to deannex 50 acres of property east of Hesston on Dutch Avenue from city limits. 

The 3-0 vote came after over an hour of discussion and public comments.  Councilman Larry Fuqua made the motion to reject the petition while Councilman Clare Moore seconded.  Councilwoman Susan Swartzendruber voted in agreement, and Councilemen Brad Unruh and Jason Jones were not present for the meeting. 

Over a dozen residents arrived at the meeting, with five addressing the Council during public comment, including landowner Jim Graber, his daughter, Sara Hasty - successor to Graber Grain Farms, and his attorney, Joshua Boehm.

The Swather robotics program won their opening tournament this school year, hosting 33 teams from six area schools.  

Swathers Cedon Yoder and Ben Hunsberger took home the title, as well as the Design Award for their bot. 

Hunsberger noted their team nabbed “The Foreman Five” - a slate of awards named after robotics educator Trevor Foreman.

Hesston High’s commons are getting new art installations thanks to the Creative Arts class. 

The four-foot by four-foot paintings will be permanently on display around the commons.  The paintings, all of which feature a Swather, were created in the art style of a well-known painter. 

Alex Martin, who carefully constructed an Andy Warhol-style piece, said she has a new appreciation for the artist’s precision.

WaterWays Making A Splash At HPL This Weekend

THE WaterWays Smithsonian exhibit will feature several interactive pieces, as well as photos and information on global and local water resources. This weekend the Smithsonian will be right in Hesston’s own Public Library with the Water Ways traveling exhibition opening on Nov. 18.  

“This is part of the Museums on Main Street initiative with the goal of bringing Smithsonian exhibits into small communities of under 10,000 people and might not normally have access or close access to high-grade national museum materials,” said Heston Public Library Director Libby Albers. 

The exhibit, which focuses on many aspects of water globally, also features local water resources.
