BREAKING NEWS: Casey's Gas Tank Fire & Explosion

Posted 11/9/2017

An explosion at Casey’s rocked the east side of Hesston as a gas tank being extracted from the front of Casey’s on Lincoln Boulevard caught fire.

A fuel storage tank was being removed when, according to site manager Alan Carlyle of Zernco Inc, a piece of cutting equipment malfunctioned, causing a spark and the fuel vapors in the tank to ignite.

Carlyle said these kinds of accidents are “very rare” and removal of gas storage tanks “is a routine thing for these guys.”

The employee operating the cutting machine received minor burns while a worker nearly 60 feet away sustained burns to his upper body, according to Hesston Police Chief Doug Schroeder. The individual with burns on his chest and upper body was hit by the concussion of the explosion as well as flames exiting a pre-cut hole in the storage container, according to Carlyle.

According to Schroeder, 911 received several calls and had “very little” information coming in, “but knowing this was a site under construction it was a safe assumption it was construction-related.”

The largest Casey’s General Store in the district is now open for business on Lincoln Boulevard.

The former Casey’s building will be demolished on Thursday and Friday of this week, according to District Manager Bonnie Green.

“We’ve had a lot of trucker traffic, but people in town don’t know we’re open.  When we have our grand opening, it’s going to be a big to-do. We’re waiting on our fuel in front and that depends on the weather,” she said.

Hesston Area Senior Center is helping residents get ready for the holidays. With Halloween come and gone, many residents are turning their attention to Christmas.

Marla Sharp, Director of HAS, said the Holiday Marketplace is a great opportunity to support local vendors and get gift-buying crossed off the to-do list.

“It’s more than a craft fair. We have home-based businesses, we have food items, we have our bake sale and we have New Years cookies that sell out every year,” said Sharp.
