First-Time Pigskin Picker Wins It All

First-time Pigskin Picks player Phil Unruh has captured the grand prize of two Kansas City Chiefs tickets.

Unruh sneaked in through the back.  He was ranked in third place last week, along with Brandon Roth, and an exceptional final week got him past Brian Johnston and Grady Pauls.   

“I knew I needed three more wins to pass Brian - we work in the same building,” said Unruh. 

The pair had a friendly rivalry throughout the contest. 

“Brian and I talked [Monday] and I hadn’t noticed I was in third.  I went back to thinking about who I had picked and thought maybe I might have done it,” he said.

Tikes at the Hesston Childcare Center will have new play equipment following the remodel of the center, thanks to a donation from the Hesston Lions Club.  

The Lions donated $500 toward the purchase of two new pieces of playground equipment. 

The donation came from the 2017 Lions Club Pancake Day fundraiser. 

Lion Ken Schwanke said Childcare Center Director Judy Friesen approached the Lions Club with a request for assistance.

Holidays Mean Rise In House Fires; Keeping Your Family Safe This Season

According to Hesston Fire/EMS Director Russ Buller, there have have been numerous structure fires in Harvey County this year and every community in the county has been affected. 

“Per the NFPA, leading causes of home structure fires is from cooking equipment and heating equipment followed by electrical devices,” said Buller. 

The damage from fires is obvious and includes fire damage, smoke and the damage caused by the process of putting out the fire. 

Buller said there are many common-sense practices that can prevent house and structure fires.

State Looking for Creative Answers for School Finance

Superintendent Ben Proctor told the USD 460 Board of Education that state legislators were taking a comprehensive approach at trying to settle the seven-year legal battle over school finance in Kansas.

Among the options being considered, he said, were amendments to the Kansas Constitution. The state constitution can be amended by a two-thirds vote in both houses of the legislature and a public vote; or if two-thirds of both houses approve a constitutional convention, and any changes coming out of said convention are put to a public vote.

Proctor said the state had hired finance experts to try to settle the requirements of equity and adequacy set by the Kansas Supreme Court. According to him, “$600 million seems to be popular number to satisfy adequacy component.
