Dart For Art Keeps Creativity Alive In Harvey County

The 4th annual Dart For Art to benefit the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts (BCAPA) is this Saturday during Fall Fest at Bethel College.

The two-mile fun run will once again feature stations along the path with art exhibitions and performances by dancers and musicians. The event will benefit scholarship funds for students to attend BCAPA.

Patrice LeFevre, an advocate for the event, said BCAPA “supports the arts not just in Newton, but throughout Harvey County.”

Career-Path Program Gives Students Extra Tools

The USD 460 Board of Education received a crash course Monday evening on the new individual plans of study and postsecondary readiness curricula that has been launched in the middle and high schools.

Middle school counselor Jillian Toews said the tools being used would allow parents to see everything that has been done from their child’s senior year to sixth grade to see what has been done to match the student’s career interests.

“It's a comprehensive look at what a student wants to be,” she said.

Library Joins In Community Health Fair Lineup

Hesston Public Library is getting involved in this Saturday’s Community Health Fair at Hesston Middle School.

Library Director Libby Albers said the fair, as a community event, presents a unique opportunity to reach patrons.

“We batted around what could we do to engage kids. We opted to focus on mental health and creative thinking and communication skills,” she said.

Scouts Kicking Off Collection Season

On Monday evening, Hesston Scouts canvassed the community hanging up door flyers for the annual Scouting for Food event, which will take place Oct. 14. Collections will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Scout leader Ken Schwanke requested canned goods be bagged and visible from the street on Saturday.

Collections from the drive will be delivered to the Hesston Resource Center.

Law Enforcement Raising Money To Feed Needy Families

HARVEY COUNTY—As the holiday season approaches, law enforcement in Harvey County are finding new ways to serve their communities. This fall, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office is leading a program called First Responders Holiday Helpers to provide food to families in need over the holiday season.

The program is spearheaded by Captain Mark Scheffler with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Reserves, who said it’s all about helping folks out.

“It’s to show we’re not only here to protect, but also to serve,” he said. “It’s a way to give back to the community.”
