Today is the deadline for the Hesston Chamber of Commerce Save Your Receipts Program.  All receipts from local chamber businesses, dated Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 must be submitted to Hesston Chamber Director Becky Galloway no later than 4 p.m.

Galloway estimated over 1,700 receipts have been turned in this year.

“Most people are coming in after the holidays this year instead of throughout the month of December,” she said.

One of the most unusual receipts turned in this year, Galloway said, was for a large bolt.

Galloway reminded residents prizes are awarded in Chamber Bucks and accepted at most local businesses.

“First place is $250; second and third are $50 and fourth and fifth are $25,” she said.

The drawing for the winners will take place at the chamber luncheon on Jan. 18.

Hesston Public Library now has a new bicycle repair station available for all cyclists in the community. The station, located on Main Street, near the library’s bicycle rack was installed on Monday morning.

“We were approached by a community donor who is an avid cyclist and wanted to see a bike repair station somewhere in the community, as well as on the college campus,” said Hesston Public Library Director Libby Albers.

Albers said she hopes residents of all ages will utilize the new station for many types of minor repairs.

“There are so many cyclists - there are kids coming and their tire is low or something is wonky. Their seat may be loose, handlebars might be loose, they may have popped their chain,” said Albers.

On Monday evening, the city council approved a write-off of just over $20,000 in non-collectable fees for emergency service and municipal court fees.

During the meeting, Fire/EMS Director Russ Buller addressed the council regarding the increase in write-offs for ambulance services.

“We work around worker’s compensation. Those are a higher percentage write-off and we’ve done a lot of work-comp claims,” said Buller.

Buller added when it comes to reimbursement, there are times the department has no control over reimbursement amounts.

The City of Hesston has a new online presence with the launching of a state-of-the-art web page on Jan. 1.

The new web page, administrated by city staff, is a major upgrade from the “several years old” page that was in use, said City Administrator Gary Emry.

One of the final components, Emry said, was an alerts and notification section, which residents can receive information either via email or text.

Emry said the project began early in 2017 with discussions with several tech firms.
