Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions at a state District 74 candidate forum beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the Hesston Area Senior Center.

Publisher Robb Reeves said his newspapers were holding the forum as an opportunity to inform voters on issues important to them.

“It is a great format to explain views and take questions from potential voters,” he said. “It is intimate town-hall type stuff and isn’t a debate.”

State Rep. Don Schroeder, state representative for the 74th District, faces challenger Stephen Owens in the Aug. 7 primary.

Reeves said he hoped someone asked about school financing, which has been a hot-button issue for years in Kansas.

“I think school funding and tax increases are important issues, and those two things go hand-in-hand,” he said.

Even those who don’t have a vested interest in education matters can benefit from attending the forum.

“Anyone who wants to be an informed voter,” Reeves said.

Reeves said his three newspapers, The Hesston Record, The Moundridge Ledger and The Harvey County Independent, almost overlaid the district perfectly. He is preparing for 25-75 attendees at the forum, and the information covered will reach several thousand readers.
