Local Agriculture Gets International Interest

The Le-Dr Dairy Farm, operated by the Lehman and Drzymalla families of Hesston, received special attention from the German Minister Counselor for Food and Agriculture Astrid Jakobs de Padua.  

Jakobs de Padua, based in Washington, D.C., made her way to Harvey County to get an up close look at the rural agricultural economy touring the dairy farm, AGCO, Pine Tree Feeders in Newton and the McCurry Angus Ranch in Burrton. 

“I wanted to come to the Heartland before I have to quit the post and I wanted to have a closer look.  What I really liked was the hospitality and the openness and the seriousness of discussing all kinds of issues,” she said.

Golf Carts Legal On Most City Streets

Vehicles of all kinds can be found on Hesston streets, but one in particular has been the cause for concern - golf carts. 

Hesston Police Chief Doug Schroeder said there are limitations on where golf carts are allowed to roll in Hesston. 

Schroeder said the carts are not allowed on public highways “or any street with a posted speed limit in excess of 30 miles per hour.”

 However, carts may cross streets with speed limits of 30 miles per hour or greater.

Sometimes You Can Choose Your Siblings

The Hesston Community Foundation is helping create chosen families in Hesston through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, which was awarded a $1,813 grant from the foundation. 

The program currently has 18 matches in Hesston, but has nearly as many Littles waiting for a match with a Big Brother/Sister, said Chris Allen, director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
