In the digital age, one young Hesstonian has picked up an old hobby, hand-turning and creating pens using a lathe.

Ben Hunsberger, a sophomore at Hesston High, said he picked up the hobby after his grandfather saw an advertisement by Bethel College professor John Bucker asking for apprentices.

“My grandpa contacted him, and he showed up with a lathe and wood in his car. Once I got into it there, I got into intro to wood shop and saw [teacher Trevor Foreman] had a mini-lathe and blanks,” said Hunsberger.

The teen said creating an everyday, useful object, from just a piece of wood is a gratifying experience.

“It’s nice because they’re not too complicated to sell. Some people think they’re interesting and it pays for the next pen assembly, the next blank or the lathe maintenance,” he said.
