For the second year running, Todd Lafferty has won the Hoops Mania grand prize - a pair of tickets to see the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Lafferty said 90 percent of his picks are luck, and 10 percent is “paying attention to the games and how the teams are doing.”

Lafferty also defied the odds being the overall top picker for just one week during the contest.

“While only winning one week, Lafferty stayed very consistent throughout the entire contest. For six of the 12 weeks, he had eight or better correct picks. Every time he seemed to falter during the contest, he'd bounce back with a great week the following edition,” said game picker and Hoops Mania grader Rusty Whitcher.

This year’s Pig Roast proceeds will finance replacement equipment for the redesigned spaces.

Residents will have the opportunity to pig out and support the Hesston Childcare Center on April 7 during the annual Pig Roast at Whitestone Mennonite Church.

The annual event is one of the largest fundraisers for Hesston Childcare Center.

Beginning in 2017, the center, along with Schowalter Villa, began undergoing major changes. During the construction of Schowalter Villa’s Private Home For Everyone, the Childcare Center playgrounds began a major redesign.

According to Childcare Center Director Judy Friesen, this year’s Pig Roast funds will be allocated to the continued redesign of the playgrounds, as well as the purchase of new playground equipment for children of all ages in the center.

With no previous history on which to base Hesston’s foray into high school baseball, head coach Skylar Hill has set his team’s expectations in a simple way.

“We want to play as hard as possible, and we want to play fast,” he said. “Our motto this year is to set the standard.”

That standard won’t be measured solely in wins and losses. He wants to establish a foundation for years to come. Fortunately, he has a good collection of athletes to meet that challenge.

Hill said the Swathers’ lineup for their first game Tuesday at Pratt would be: Cameron Cox, pitcher; Matt Whitsitt, catcher; Ben Roth, first base; Cody Wohlgemuth, second base; Austin Griffin, shortstop; Brendan Boles, third base; Camden McDonald, right field; Brady Cox, centerfield; Jacob Eilert, right field.
